In light of Thanksgiving passing by, there are so many things that I am feeling particularly grateful for.
Throughout this semester, I have written many essays about poverty and world hunger. These topics have truly put things into perspective for me, especially when it comes to the opportunities and resources I have in my own life. It is a privilege that my biggest concerns are what university I will attend next year or what grade I will receive on my paper. Meanwhile, millions of people around the world do not know if they will be able to afford their next meal.
It is natural for us as college students to complain about the amount of schoolwork we have to do or how much we have to study. However, how privileged are we to have the opportunity to receive an education and to learn from educators who want to see us succeed? Changing my mindset has made me appreciate the things I tend to overlook—especially my education. Of course, there are times when I would rather be doing anything than writing a 10-page paper, but there are so many people who jump at the opportunity to be in my position.
I am especially grateful for all the opportunities Miami Dade College and my professors have given me. I am privileged to be part of an environment that wants to see its students succeed and supports us in reaching our goals by providing unique and meaningful experiences. I have grown so much as a person through these opportunities, especially those that involve giving back to my community. As the holidays approach, there are many ways we as students can contribute and help those in need.
During the holiday season, food drives and food pantries need volunteers more than ever. If you are interested in giving back, you can sign up for any of the opportunities below:
